📝 Special Statement

Embark on an epic Viking saga in Hnefatafl, a masterful Scandinavian strategy board game that once rivaled chess for dominance! ⚔️ This isn't just a game; it's a brutal clash of wits and tactical genius, a forgotten relic of the Middle Ages brought back to life. You'll command an army of brave warriors in a fight for survival, where every move could lead to glorious victory or utter defeat.

A Battle of Wits and Variants

The game features several distinct styles of play, each offering a unique challenge:

  • Board Size: Choose your battlefield, from a compact 7x7 grid to a sprawling 13x13 board.
  • Victory Conditions: Your mission will change with the rules. Guide your king to the edge of the board in one mode, or to a corner "fortress" in another.
  • King's Capture: The attackers must surround the king from two or even four sides to claim victory.
  • Player Count: Take on the cunning AI, challenge a friend on a single device, or test your mettle against opponents from around the world in multiplayer mode.

The Rules of War

The black, attacking pieces strike first, a relentless assault on the white, defending army. All pieces move like a chess rook, a straight line of any length, either vertically or horizontally. However, there are no diagonal moves, and pieces cannot jump over one another. The central "throne" and the corner "fortresses" can only be occupied by the king.

You'll capture enemy figures using a strategic "pincer" maneuver, trapping them between two of your own pieces on your turn. It's also possible to capture a figure by pinching it between one of your pieces and an empty "throne." Captured pieces are gone forever, making every move a high-stakes decision.

The Path to Victory

For the defending white forces to win, the king must escape from the central "throne" to a designated victory area:

  • Corner Fortresses: In a game with corner strongholds, the king must reach one of them to secure victory.
  • Board Edge: In other variants, the king only needs to reach the edge of the board to win.

The attacking black forces only have one goal: to trap and capture the king, surrounding him on all sides. Can you outwit your opponent and claim the throne for your side? 👑
